How to Name a Business

I am often asked “Hey Dumisani, how important is the name that I give to my business?” or “How do I name my business in the first place?”
Just as important as is the name you give to your children so is the name you give to your business. I have some uncles who give funny names to their children like; Design, Plan, What, Honourable, Resign, Parapara Ncube etc, it’s interesting to note that most of them have been working on changing them. How to Name A Business.

You could have noticed that Parents like giving Christian names like Paul, John, Peter, Mathew…. But you will note that non give names like Judas, Hitler….. simply because a name is important.

Techniques of Business Naming.

So when naming a business, it’s imperative to note that, that is how the business will be addressed for the rest of its life or career.

Possible ways of naming include:

#1. Two Words Make One.

Zambeef made up of Zam and Beef, Megapix, Afriseed, Seedco, PanAfrican…. This is an interesting easy way of coming up with names.

#2. Made Up Name.

Yahoo, Google, Sentrix……. This is good and easy, you just have to make up a fancy easy to remember name.

#3. Meaning in a different language.

Musika, Yalelo, Manda Hill……. This works if the word is easy to pronounce and remember.

#4. Acronym.

DLN, DHL, ZCAS,GBM, ZAMTEL, KFC, ZSIC, ADUQ…. This could be an acronym for Directors or the core services offered

#5. Your Name.

Mercedes Benz, Dangote, Mc Donalds…… Easy way out but if your name is difficult like mine ‘Lingamangali’, too common like ‘John’, hard to remember like ‘Mulonyumbwe’ then don’t consider them.

Considerations When Naming;

#1. Specialised Names.

Gladtidings Software Ltd, Agawal eye hospital, Cardsplus…..If you have a specialised niche, then having a specialised name will sale for you.

#2. Short and Long Term Goals.

The company name should cater for short term and long term goals, take for instance you should not name your business Gladtidings Software Ltd when you have long term intentions of increasing your portfolio from just software to access control and CCTV.

#3. General Dealers.

Clients naturally don’t trust people who deal in everything. Having names like Bwalya General dealers, JJ enterprises….. works to your disadvantage if you really want to grow big in a particular industry.

#4. Too long.

Having a very long name makes it difficult to remember and gives a possibility of making mistakes when typing the email address or website.

These are just simple tips to help get started, if you have any contribution, question or comment do so in the comment section.
