THE BEAUTY OF AN UNDERDOG BUSINESS

When aunties to my girlfriend then asked her about what I was doing, she told them that I produce IDs for schools. They were initially shocked before they burst into laughter. They were like “So you are telling us that your boyfriend goes to Institutions with a camera capturing people to produce IDs?” she affirmed to that to their surprise. Of course they made fun of the business as an underdog undertaking but they didn’t drill down to understand what it was about.

History of DLN Technologies Ltd.

The beauty of an underdog is that no one expects you to win except yourself. I remember when I started DLN Technologies, we were just printing PVC ID cards. This was at its infancy before we started selling PVC card printers, Smart card printers, Integration software, security technologies etc. The company was founded around one PVC Card printer used to produce Identity cards for Schools and organisations.

Don’t Mind What People Think.

Behind the Scenes.

Let get behind and see what is happening.
The cost of producing a PVC ID card is about K5.00 putting the cost of all consumables together and we were charging an average of K50.00 per card. At about the same time of their laughter I had just gotten a deal to produce 3,000.00 ID cards for a University and I was charging them K50.00 per card.Let me put some figures for you to understand better; the cost of producing them was 3,000.00 cards by K5 each gives K15,000 as the cost of production, we were charging them K50.00 each by 3,000 cards giving us K150,000.00 Removing all expenses we had a profit of about K130,000.00 and the production process was three days.

Mind Own Your Business.

Hearing of how they were teasing me I almost lost it by saying, “With your K5,000.00 monthly salary, you have to work for 3 years to make what I make in a month.” What I am trying to drive to is that don’t mind the business you are involved in provided it is legal and you know where you are headed.Allow peers, family, friends who see you as an underdog based on the nature of your business undertaking say whatever they wish. One day they will understand you better when you are at the top and they will confess of how they always believed in you.Actually before this I had done odd stuff like selling goats, run a Kiosk (Katemba), merchandising etc which brought about teasing here and there but I am proud of the crazy experiences I had and lessons learnt.

Follow your Dreams.

Two and a half years later the same who teased are proud of what the company has grown to be. My message is follow your dreams and odd ideas but note that when you start out, you do not have the right to be supported but earn the right by proving them wrong. So friends pursue that tissue business, that sewage unblocking idea, it’s about your life and future………STAND UP, YOUR POWERFUL UNDERDOG BUSINESS IS WAITING.
