Instead of flying for the conference in Gaborone-Botswana I told organisers that I would like to drive so that I have the opportunity to make many stopovers to view tourism spots in Botswana before driving across Zimbabwe on a similar mission on my way back after the conference.Considering the time I started off yesterday from Nata, it was clear that I needed to cruise to make it early at Church in Francistown which is a distance of about 200 kilometres. My accomplice Br Ford Ranger agreed to my weakness of speed. Lo and behold a speed trap traffic police officer stops me……. a replayed video shows that I was hitting 145kms/hour in an 80kms/hour zone. I explained that I honestly did not see the poster limiting me to 80kms/hour moreover I saw no reason why they would waste such a smooth, straight and fertile tarmac for speed with such a speed limit.
Surprisingly, unlike in Zambia, in Botswana over speeding does not have a uniform charge but depends on how far above the speed limit you were. Its 20pula per extra 1km/h over the speed limit plus a fixed charge of 100pula. Since I was 65km/h above the speed limit then my charge had to be 1,400pula (K1,640). Infact I was even lucky because a moment earlier my accomplice was misbehaving at 195kms/hour and was still showing willingness to burn some more diesel, I would have been charged about K3000 if not locked up. I lost a lot of time trying to plead for forgiveness with my art of persuasion to no avail, I had to pay in the end because its either I am forgiven or made to pay but not to bribe as that is against my core values.I wanted to arrive early by being fast, unfortunately I ended up losing money in addition to being late.
I would have even arrived much earlier if I observed all the rules but because of wanting to have a quick fix I lost out.The mistake i made has been made by many who want to acquire wealth quickly by unconventional means, losing time and money in the process.
Some have lost their jobs by trying to get promotions fast or cheating the institution they are working for financially. Some have lost loyal customers by overcharging them and under delivering in a quest to make quick huge profits. Some have lost great business partners because of trying to take advantage of them financially all with the aim of filling their pockets with quick unfair gains.Comment below on how others have lost it by trying to do a quick fix……
